Housing Assistance Program Taking Applications Now!

December 3, 2018

If you were affected by Hurricane Harvey and still need help with home repairs, the Texas General Land Office has just launched a Housing Assistance Program.  This Housing Assistance Program is run by the General Land Office and provides the following types of assistance:

  • Repairing and rehabilitating homes
  • Reconstruction
  • Improving a damaged home so that it is stronger against natural disasters
  • Elevating homes above flood level
  • Temporary relocation assistance

This program is geared towards low-to-moderate income residents, although everyone is encouraged to apply.  The General Land Office will be reviewing all completed applications and will make determinations on a case-by-case basis.  The program is first-come, first serve and only available for a main home (primary residence).

You can apply online, fill out a paper application and mail it or drop it off at a regional office, or visit a homeowner assistance program regional office for an application and help with the application process.  The local housing assistance program regional office is located in Sugar Land at 1 Sugar Creek Center Boulevard, Suite 200, Sugar Land TX 77478.  For more information about how to apply for the program and to check the status of your application, please visit http://recovery.texas.gov/individuals/programs/homeowner-assistance/lower-colorado/index.html

If you need any direct help with the application or have questions about this program, please email cdr@recovery.texas.gov or call 1-844-893-8937.

(As a side note, the General Land Office will be launching a separate program in the coming months geared towards reimbursing homeowners for home repairs following Hurricane Harvey.  As more information is made available, it will be shared.)

Deadline to Submit NFIP Claims Fast Approaching!

August 22, 2018

The deadline for residents with flood insurance to submit a claim with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is just days away!  The deadline is one year from the date that the damage occurred.  Harvey first made landfall in Texas on Aug. 25, 2017, with heavy rainfall and flooding occurring for several days after it hit. For this reason, the date of loss varies for property owners.

NFIP usually requires policyholders to submit a Proof of Loss claim within 60 days from the date of their loss. Policyholders were given an extension up to a year because of the magnitude of Hurricane Harvey’s damage.

FEMA urges policyholders to submit their forms as soon as possible. Policyholders should contact their insurance agent or the NFIP Call Center at 800-427-4661 with questions about filing.
